Much more than a method: Sharing Training and Evaluation Cycle Methodologies for People on the Move

What is TEC?

Behind the technical name Training and Evaluation Cycle (TEC) lies the "heartbeat" of the European Solidarity Corps (ESC).

It is a high-quality support system designed to help young volunteers get the most out of their experience abroad or in their local communities.

TEC isn't just a series of meetings; it is a continuous journey of non-formal learning that happens before, during, and after a project. Through guided sessions, volunteers are encouraged to reflect on their personal growth, learn how to navigate new cultures, and turn their daily challenges into valuable life skills.

The cycle typically includes four key moments:

  • Pre-departure Training: Preparing for the journey and setting personal goals.
  • On-Arrival Training: Helping volunteers adapt to their new host country and community.
  • Mid-Term Evaluation: A chance to pause, reflect on the progress made, and solve any challenges.
  • Annual Events: Bringing former volunteers together to share their stories and plan their next steps.

A Brief History: From EVS to ESC

The roots of these programs go back nearly 30 years. European volunteering began in the 1990s with the European Voluntary Service (EVS), which officially launched in 1996. For two decades, EVS helped thousands of young people foster solidarity and active citizenship across borders.

In 2017, the program evolved into the European Solidarity Corps (ESC). This change wasn't just in name—it expanded the mission to include not only international projects but also local volunteering to support communities in need. Since 2021, the ESC has become a fully independent program with its own dedicated budget, continuing a long tradition of building a more united and compassionate Europe.

Why Does It Work?

The success of TEC is built on 25 years of "learning by doing". Instead of traditional classrooms, TEC uses Non-Formal Education. This means learning through group games, role-playing, and shared discussions. It is a "social masterclass" that creates a safe space for people from different backgrounds to connect, share their wisdom, and grow together.
